Coming from humble beginnings, top fashion designer Thomas Burberry started out as a tailor’s apprentice. He founded the company in 1856 and in 1880, he showcased his first collection of durable outerwear that are mainly jackets sold in a quiet shop at the Hampshire. By 1990, the brand debuted as Thomas Burberry and Sons in West End of London.
Burberry is known for its strong and water/ air-resistant outerwear that even the explorers of South Pole use. The World War I soldiers also fight in trench coats designed by Burberry. The Burberry trademark lies on its unique check pattern that has been first seen on the lining of trench coats in the 1920’s. By 1955, it has been hit big as Queen Elizabeth II gave the brand the Royal Warrant. It has also dresses the popular actress Audrey Hepburn during the equally famous Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
The Burberry expanded and reached major cities in the US by 80’s. By 2001, Kate Moss has become the new face of Burberry. Under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey, Burberry becomes one of the most sought after designer clothes. It speaks of luxury with an added kick of funkiness that makes it a big hit in the fashion industry.
